Like french toast, when I have left over french bread, I simply cube it and use it for croutons. The most versitle crouton in our home is the Butter Basil recipe. It’s perfect for Tomato Bisque! However, once you get into the habit of making your own croutons, you will learn which flavor suits your own family.
- Day old French Bread
- 1 stick butter, melted
- ½ teaspoon basil
- Sea Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Cut bread into cubes and place in a large bowl. Drizzle cubes with butter, basil, salt and pepper. Mix well to coat bread.
- Spread seasoned bread onto a sheet pan and bake for 10 minutes. I often turn off my oven and leave them in the oven to "slow cook" on the pan. When I'm ready to serve, I pull them out and top on soup or salad.
